About The Brewery, History And Region Weihenstephaner Vitus comes from the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan in Freising, Bavaria, a brewery with a history unlike almost any other in the world. The story begins in 725, when Saint Corbinian and twelve companions founded a Benedictine monastery on Weihenstephan Hill above Freising. Hops were being cultivated around the monastery by the eighth century, and in 1040 Abbot Arnold secured the official right to brew and sell beer. That year marks the beginning of the Weihenstephan Monastery Brewery. Over the centuries, the monastery survived fires, wars, plague, famine and repeated destruction. Each time, the monks rebuilt and continued brewing. When the monastery was dissolved in 1803, the brewery continued under Bavarian state ownership and eventually became the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan. Today, beer is still brewed on Weihenstephan Hill in Freising, surrounded by the modern brewing and food science facilities of the Technical University of Munich. It is a fascinating combination of nearly one thousand years of brewing tradition and modern brewing knowledge. Freising sits in Upper Bavaria, north of Munich, surrounded by rolling countryside with views toward the Alps.
