About The Brewery And Region Ballast Point Brewing Company began in San Diego in 1996, growing from a small group of home brewers who wanted to make more flavourful and interesting beer. Its roots can be traced to Home Brew Mart, which opened in 1992 and became an important meeting place for the local brewing community. Sculpin IPA was first brewed in 2005 after two home brew recipes were combined and refined through years of experimentation. The beer was hopped at five different stages to create its distinctive combination of citrus, tropical fruit and assertive bitterness. It went on to become the brewery’s most famous beer and an important part of the rise of San Diego style West Coast IPA. Pineapple Sculpin builds on that original beer by adding sweet pineapple character to its naturally tropical hop profile.
